Biodynamic Gardening

Biodynamics is a holistic, ecological, and ethical approach to farming, gardening, food, and nutrition.

At Living Oaks, we have a 1,000 square foot biodynamic teaching garden, which includes a food forest with over 20 different fruit trees, as well as themed gardens around the campus, including a dye garden, butterfly garden, and a 3 sisters garden. We also have a large chicken coop, apiary, greenhouse and composting area. Children in grades 1-8 attend bi-weekly garden classes where they learn to grow and tend to our edible crops as well as dye and harvest medicinal plants. The gardening curriculum is developmentally-based and reflects the main lesson work in each grade. Food from the garden is harvested and prepared for lunches in the kitchen . All food waste is brought back to the farm to be composted and recycled into soil. We will continue to expand our gardens in the years to come.
